The UK’s retail banking sector will see a new entrant next month when Metro Bank opens its first branch on 29th July, in London’s Holborn, to be followed by an Earl’s Court branch, in August.
The venture, founded by Anthony Thomson, chairman of the Financial Services Forum, and Vernon Hill, who set up Commerce Bancorp in the US, hopes to get ahead of the competition with opening hours that extend from 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 10am to 4pm at weekends.
A further 12 branches are planned over the next two years, with the network potentially expanding to 200 in the Greater London area within a decade.
